A new study just released has shown that Zen Meditation can thicken parts of the brain that manage pain.
Researchers from the Université de Montréal have shown that the centuries old art of meditation increases the thickness of the anterior cingulate which reduces suseptability to pain. According to lead author Joshua Grant:
"Through training, Zen meditators appear to thicken certain areas of their cortex and this appears to underlie their lower sensitivity to pain."
The Montréal study was performed with 18 zen meditators and 17 non-meditators. A heated plate was applied to the calf of the participants and they were given an MRI to measure the reaction of their brain.
According to a previous study, zen meditators can reduce their sensitivity to pain by 18% when compared with a non-meditator. Therefore, if you would like to participate in natural pain relief, Zen meditation may be a good activity for you.
