The consumption of natural health products is continually increasing. Some people believe they are more effective than conventional medicine, others desire to keep chemicals out of their bodies. There are different types of natural health products: • Acupuncture - one of the five branches of traditional Chinese medicine, tries to regulate the flow of energy in the body
• Osteopathy - the identification and removal of tension in the body
• Massotherapy - massage can help relax the body and reduce its risk of injury
• Aromatherapy - the use of essential oils from plants to treat symptoms.
• Homeopathy - treatment of a disease by the ingestion of minute amounts of substances that can cause the symptoms.
Natural health products, though, are not without criticism. For example, homeopathy has been removed from the list of approved treatments by the UK’s National Health Service because they couldn’t determine scientifically that it worked better than a placebo.
Yet natural health products are increasingly popular. Statistics Canada conducted a survey released in 2005 showing the use of alternative approaches in dealing with health issues.
• 13% of Canadians visited an alternative medical practitioner in 2003
• 81% of Canadians believe that they with use natural health products
• 71% have used a natural health product
• Only 45% say they know what a natural health product it
• 52% believe that natural health products are not dangerous because they are natural
• 38% use natural health products every day
Are natural health products for you? Everyone is different and has different circumstances. Improving overall health should be the goal, through eating better, reducing stress and ensuring a natural environment. To treat some illnesses, natural health products can be effective.
However, for some more serious illnesses, it’s important to consult a doctor to ensure that a treatment plan is created taking care of your wishes. As far as possible, find a qualified medical practitioner that has the same beliefs as you.
