The latest craze in health research appears to be vitamin D. According to its proponents it can help keep cancer at bay, help keep bones strong and possibly keep blood pressure low. Sounds great, so should are you getting enough vitamin D supplements? Before being able to reply to that it's important to understand....Where does vitamin D come from?In the natural world, vitamin D is made within the human body when sun falls on the skin. Areas such as the neck and the backs of legs are particularly productive. However, there are several reasons that prevent many people from making an ideal dose of vitamin D.In geographically northern areas such as New York, Canada or the UK, there is simply too little opportunity to be out in the sun long enough to generate meaningful amounts of vitamin D. The weather is either too cold or too grey to allow enough sunlight to fall on the skin. In southern areas, the sun light is so strong that we now tend to apply a lot of suncream to prevent cancer. Unfortunately the suncream also reduces the production of vitamin C in the body by 90%*. Is it a good idea to take supplements?David Servan-Schreiber is a French doctor who has spent several years investigating ways to reduce the risk of cancer. He is categorical on the need to take vitamin D supplements. Although Servan-Schreiber states that he doesn't believe in the need to take supplements as a general rule, he does believe that vitamin D is necessary especially for those who live in northerly climates. 80% of North Americans suffer from a lack of vitamin D*.How much should you take? There is a disagreement on how much vitamin D each person should take, from 1000 international units per day to 4000 international units per day. When deciding how much to take, it's important to consult a doctor. There are several ways to take the vitamin, either once per day or once per month with a prescription from your doctor.* Source: David Servan-Schreiber Image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gr33n3gg/3445868159 For more insight into this topic, see these articles:
