How hot is your yoga class? Most classes are given at room temperature, but there is one form of yoga where the air is heated to 40.5°C (105°F) and given a humidity of 40%: Bikram Yoga. This form of yoga was developed by Bikram Choudhury and popularized in the early 1970s. It consists of 26 particular poses (asanas) and 2 breathing exercises (pranayama). These are designed to stretch the muscles in such a way that they are starved of oxygen during the asanas before being filled with fresh oxygen at the end of the asana. This process is called extension and compression. The idea behind the moving of oxygen in Bikram yoga is that with the removal of oxygen toxins and infections are removed from the muscle and can be ejected from the body. In addition, the asanas are designed to stretch muscles further than they are normally used. So why the elevated temperature during Bikram yoga? Choudhury believes that at a higher temperature, stretching, stress and tension relief is more effective and there is a lower chance of injury. Would Bikram yoga be suitable for you? The courses are suited to both beginners and experienced practioners. However, a fundamental difference between a more classical approach to yoga such as Hatha is that Bikram is much less about meditation. It is more physical and demanding. If you're considering Bikram yoga, ask yourself why you are taking yoga classes, for physical reasons or for relaxation. Also, if you have any history of medical problems, it would be advisable to consult with your doctor before trying Bikram yoga due to the elevated temperature. Otherwise, why not give it a go and let us know what you think?
