Detoxification is the process of removing toxins from the body. Toxins can build up from the food we eat or other products that we are in contact with in our environment.
The process of detoxification can be considered to be a cleaning process where the body removes items that have built up that are not useful for its every day function. There are also medical forms of detoxification, for example kidney dialysis or that performed by drug users to end an addiction. Of course, if life is lived in an optimum way, they would be no need for a detoxification at all. However in the real world, most of us do partake in activities and food consumption that leads to the accumulation of toxins within our body. There are many ways to detox and many remedies that are sold on the market. Recent studies however, have shown these remedies to have very little effect. The BBC made this report into detox remedies: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7812597.stm This leaves the most basic way to detox, through diet with some fasting. Fasting can be a great way to begin detox as it gives the body time to rest before it starts work on detoxification. Such fasting should not last long, at the most one or two days, depending upon what you feel comfortable with. Dominique Loreau, in her book "L'Art de la Simplicité" suggests that: "... after fasting the body needs less food and is happy with smaller portions. You'll feel your bones and will have more energy. You work harder and your problems seem less serious." This is a none medical description of the effects of fasting in the author's experience - how would you experience the after effects of fasting? ![]() Detoxification through diet essentially relies on the intakes of pure foods, in as raw a form as possible. This will give the body the energy to start processing fats and expel toxins that are found to be stored there. Maintaining such a diet for as long as possible will help keep the amount of toxins in the body low. Foods to include are fruits, vegetables, pulses and whole grains. Avoid cooked fats, processed foods, salt, dairy, meat and fish. Detox is an useful process in keeping the body healthy and has good side effects in increasing your well-being. Trust yourself, listen carefully to your body: It will tell you what it needs. |
