How much space do you need to grow your own vegetables? You may think that you need a big back garden, but this is not really the case and would not be ideal if you were just starting out growing your own. Even if you have just a balcony, you can start producing your own fresh food.

Why would you want to have your own garden? There are numerous advantages, such as being able to control the growing environment, having very fresh and very tasty fruit and vegetables at your immediate and convenient disposal, and the fun of doing some gardening! In addition, if you have kids it helps them understand where their food comes from.

Whatever the space you have available and whatever your ambition you can grow some fresh food. Imagine on your balcony having a pot of fresh herbs and small vegetables. Next time you are preparing a salad, amble out to your pot and select the herbs you need, no need to go to the supermarket, no wasted cut herbs decomposing in the fridge!

It needn’t be time consuming either to grow food on your balcony. You’ll just need to regularly water your containers and spend just over an hour a week taking care of your plants. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, in the height of summer, being rewarded by fresh tomatoes, zucchini and basil, all grown in your own garden?

Although it’s not feasible to grow all of your vegetable needs on your balcony, every bit you can do will be good for you, the environment and your bank balance. Not to forget of course, all the fun you’ll have doing it! Now, what’s more Zen than that?
