Why Should You Use Natural Detergents and Not Chemical Ones? PDF Print E-mail

altYou’ve often heard of old wives’ tales of how you can clean a stain with sodium bicarbonate but maybe you didn’t really believe it. We live in a society that is convinced that only the products made in chemical factories are effective.

Well, the old wives’ tales were not totally wrong. Before the Second World War most household cleaning was done with a few basic items that you probably still have in your cupboards today. With the growth of the large chemical companies and their marketing new products became available that promised to make cleaning simpler.

Yet, there are alternatives to industrially made detergents and there are many reasons that you should use them.

Today we are increasingly aware that our environment is polluted, the air we breathe and the waters that run are not as clean as they should be. However, few recognize that the air inside our homes can contain many more pollutants than the air outside. How is this possible? There are may reasons, but toxic chemicals from detergents and the lack of ventilation in modern houses are contributors.

You may already be aware of the impact of detergents on your health. Just using them can be an unpleasant experience. Do you remember squirting a product and having a feeling of discomfort?

Typical symptoms caused or aggravated by detergents may include: headaches, respiratory irritation, tiredness, irritability, skin allergies and nervous system or liver problems.
Bicarbonate of soda for making natural detergents
The good news is that it’s becoming easier and easier to buy products that are less toxic for your health, or you can even make them yourselves. You may have local suppliers that mix detergents for you or local, national and international brands. Ecover is well known in Europe and has been very successful. Some companies that have been making standard detergents are now offering natural ones too.

Natural detergents are just as effective in most cases than chemical based ones, especially for washing clothes (yes, even children's clothes). Even surface sprays for bathrooms and kitchens work very, very well and don't require a lot more elbow grease.

Natural detergents can also work out a lot cheaper too, especially if you choose to mix and make them yourself. In some areas you can buy direct from companies that mix their own products from natural ingredients at a very reasonable price.

The factors of: health, environment, effectiveness and price are all good reasons to use natural detergents in your home. You benefit and the environment benefits too. How Zen is that?
