We amass things. Lots of things, in fact we end up stuffing our homes with items. We buy them in sales "just in case", keep old boxes of clothes "just in case" and have other objects near by.Yet all this hoarding can have a negative impact on us and our well being. Our homes should be a haven of peace where we can relax and feel good vibes. Having lots of items around, especially if they are not tidied away in an orderly fashion can perturb this feeling of peace and well being. Clutter is a source of visual stress. Our brain needs to process everything that it sees, so the more things that we see, the more work we have causing real stress to build up inside. Your home should contain the items that you need to live your life and they should be practical and comfortable. It's better to have fewer items that are of better quality, perform better when you use them and are more adapted to your lifestyle. If your home is uncluttered, it's easier to keep clean and tidy and we all know that a clean home feels much better than an untidy and dirty one. Emptiness is a characteristic that we don't always cherish, but it adds to our feeling of well being. Dominique Loreau in her book "L'Art de la Simplicité" suggests that "An empty space offers its occupants the feeling that they control their existence, because they are not possessed, and this gives them an increased feeling of control and satisfaction." ![]() Empty space can also help you think and work. Think of the benefits of an empty desk that invites you to start creating something new and moving forward with your initiatives. Yet a cluttered desk with papers, cups, and ipods everywhere does nothing but distract you and slow you down in what you want to do. The same reasoning applies on a larger scale to your complete home environment. It's not always easy to bring space and minimalism to your home, but there are benefits and you will feel better. What can you do today to make your house increase your well being? Come back soon to read these articles:
