Urban gardening is a way for city and suburban dwellers to grow their own fruit and vegetables within their homes or close by.The benefits of doing so are multiple and varied. Here are some of the key ones: 1. Saving money - growing your own food saves a lot of money, both because you can harvest and use when you need, so there is less waste, and it's cheaper to buy seeds or seedlings than having a farmer grow food for you, transport it and then sell through retail! 2. Knowing where your food comes from - if you grow your food yourself, you know exactly how it was produced and what chemicals were or weren't put on it. You can employ organic techniques to ensure that it is as wholesome as possible. 3. Educating your children about food - show your kids exactly where their food comes from and what it takes to grow it. They will be fascinated by participating in planting their food and seeing it grow. How wonderful to eat something that you've grown yourself! 4. Getting exercise - growing your own food doesn't have to take a lot of time, but you will have to go outside to tend to the plants and look out for pests. It's a great excuse to get some fresh air and to introduce some gentle regular exercise into your life that is so good for your health 5. Fresh food has great taste - harvest, prepare and eat all in the same few minutes. Better tasting food is hard to come by.
