How much of the world is vegetarian? In India, there are a lot of restaurants that are exclusively vegetarian, whilst in France there are very few. More than one third of the Indian population considers themselves to be vegetarian (Hindu CNN IBN from 2006) whilst only 1.5% of French do so (Source: European Vegetarian Union from 1996). On average, the western world has around 5% vegetarians. The two countries in Europe with the largest number of non-meat eaters are Germany and the United Kingdom. Certain cities attract large groups of vegetarians, for example in Berlin 30% of the population is vegetarian (source: wikipedia). In North America, vegetarians are most often found in large cities, and more so on the West Coast. Large numbers of vegetarians can be found in Vancouver and San Francisco.
