The Twelve Foods You Must Eat Organic PDF Print E-mail

The Environmental Working Group has analyzed US FDA and DoA data to determine which foods absorb pesticides the most rapidly. If you want to avoid consuming pesticides, avoid consuming these foods.

Certain foods are more capable of absorbing pesticides than others, either due to their thin skin or their root systems. Some of the pesticide residue remains on the skin and can be to some extent washed off, yet some of the pesticide is absorbed either through the skin or root system into the food.

According to the US government, trace amounts of pesticides are safe to consume, but according to researchers such as David Servan-Schreiber, a build-up of trace pesticides can be a factor in cancer.

The food that contains the highest number of pesticides, between 47 and 67 per serving, is celery. So how can you avoid such foods? As a general rule, it is better to buy organic produce where possible, especially from a local farm if that is available to you.

Organic produce is grown without pesticides and herbicides and therefore is healthier for the body.

The twelve foods that absorb the most pesticides are:
  1. Celery
  2. Peaches
  3. Strawberries
  4. Apples
  5. Domestic blueberries
  6. Nectarines
  7. Sweet bell peppers
  8. Spinach, kale and collard greens
  9. Cherries
  10. Potatoes
  11. Imported grapes
  12. Lettuce

The foods that absorb the least pesticides are:
  1. Onions
  2. Avocados
  3. Sweet corn
  4. Pineapples
  5. Mango
  6. Sweet peas
  7. Asparagus
  8. Kiwi fruit
  9. Cabbage
  10. Eggplant
  11. Cantaloupe
  12. Watermelon
  13. Grapefruit
  14. Sweet potatoes
  15. Sweet onions
  16. What is a pesticide?

Another reason to buy organic is that in doing so, the demand for conventional food will drop and the amount of farms using pesticides will drop. This will reduce the overall amount of pesticides and synthetic fertilizer that is  placed into the environment.

To live a Zen life is to live healthily and to respect the environment. Therefore, as far as possible, purchase and consume organic!
