The agricultural revolution that took place after the Second World War had the sole goal of increasing the productivity of farms and ensuring that the population of the Western world had enough to eat.

Battery farming, pesticides and monoculture were introduced at this point in time, giving birth to industrial agriculture. The counterpart to this is organic agriculture which has not used synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, or seed derived from genetic engineering efforts.

Until recently, organic shops were the preserve of a "way-out" minority far removed from the masses who frequented supermarkets. However today for more and more people, eating and living an organic lifestyle is a must. The demand for organic products doesn't stop increasing.

Organic has become popular because it is coupled with a movement where people are focused on taking more care of themselves, both physically and spiritually. Whilst organic products tend to be more expensive than their conventional counterparts, an ever increasing part of the population is willing to pay that extra price. A luxury good is beginning to become a commodity for the middle-class.

The decision taken by the Obamas to cultivate an organic vegetable patch at the White House has certainly had a very positive effect on the demand for these products throughout the world.

Organic Throughout the World

The Australians are the largest consumers of organic food! They have the largest area given over to organic agriculture. In 2005 there were 11.3 million hectares dedicated to organic agriculture in Oceana, compared with 6.3m in Europe and 1.4m in North America (Source: SOEL Survey).

The US is a large producer of GM foods. Not very organic!

In Europe, all human food has to be clearly labelled if it contains GM foodstuff. However, animal food can and does contain GM grains which of course find their way unlabelled into the humain food chain.

The following video - Store Wars - shows with a lot of humour the fight related to the organic agriculture.
