Ten tips for a Zen trip with children PDF Print E-mail

altTravelling with children can and should be fun for everyone involved. Kids often see new things with their very logical and fresh eyes which when shared with you will let you see things differently.

To have such a Zen experience requires quite a bit of forward planning and making sure that you take into account your children's needs. Here are some points to think about:

1. What food do you need to take with you? Can you buy food where you're going? Is there somewhere to warm it up if it's for young children? Is it easy to get vegetarian food?

2. What are the current security restrictions for travelling? Have you checked with your airline and/or national authorities?

3. How child-friendly are the restaurants you're visiting? For example, in Belgium they may not have child seats but in Canada most probably will.

4. Have you remembered to bring some appropriate toys with you? Ones that make noise are probably not the best for the aeroplane.

5. If you're flying you can probably take an infant's chair for free in the aeroplane with you to strap them in. This will save money, but may be awkward to carry around.

6. Have you remembered to bring with you your children's medicine? It's always good to have emergency rations of pain-killers (e.g. paracetamol, acetaminophen ), plasters, a thermometer, antiseptic cream.

7. If you're going to a hot and sunny location, don't forget the sun cream, after sun, lip balm and hats.

8. Make a plan of where you'll be at what time of the day. Write in meal times and what/where you'll eat.

9. Always carry some water and fruit or biscuits in case your children need refreshments and you can't stop.

10. One or two days before the trip, sit down with the kids and even if they're really small explain to them what will happen. It will make them much calmer knowing what's to come.

Enjoy your trip, and if you've any other hints and tips to share with the ConnectionZen community, add them to the comments below.
