Inspiration

I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.

When is the latest age to start something new? PDF Print E-mail

It's never too late to start something new, such as runningAge is a central part of our considerations when we consider if we should start something new: “I’m too old to start this” or “too old to learn that.” Is that really the case for you?

When is it too old to run a marathon for the first time? 25 or 45? The Japanese author Haruki Murakami went from smoking 60 cigarettes a day to running for at least an hour a day at the age of 33. He suddenly took the decision to start running at that age, trained well and ran his first marathon soon after. Into his 50s, he’s still running his hour a day and still running marathons.

It’s true that things are harder as we get older. The body is less capable and it does take longer to learn new things. That doesn’t mean that we’re too old to start and it doesn’t mean that we can’t achieve our goals. It’s always possible if we try hard enough and put in enough effort. As we get older, it may just mean more effort and time to achieve those goals.

Starting a new business is the same. Is it a young man’s game or can older people do it? You may be surprised to learn that many entrepreneurs start their first company in their 40s, once their children are more self-sufficient and they have greater knowledge and networks.

Today younger generations are going to live a long time, especially if they follow a Zen lifestyle. Whilst the baby boomers retired in their late 50s and early 60s, younger generations will be professionally active until later in their life. So it’s important to be prepared to reinvent oneself and to have challenges on both a personal and professional level.

What are you going to start new today?
