How can we make education substantially better than it is today? How do we make school a success for every child? Many countries and organizations are grappling with this question, it's certainly not an easy one to answer. There are different systems in operation, but most work around the concept of a national curriculum delivered through schools that are more or less comprehensive with a school board overseeing them. Yet in many countries this set-up is failing. Increased quantities of money put into education by governments have not shown big changes in results, thus suggesting that there are systemic problems with the way schools are managed. Political parties in most countries will find it difficult electorally to make substantial changes, there are vested interests at play and the fact that the electorate has been educated with a certain mindset. So what are the changes that need to be made? It's difficult to come up with a concrete answer. As a Zen parent it's first important to understand what kind of education your child would require and see what's available where you live. If rigid systems offer you little choice, then try to participate in the schools, for example as parent-governors, and make changes on that level. Here at ConnectionZen, we'll be looking at ideas on how to better structure education and will share those with you in the future.
