Obesity is more important than the uninsured, tort reform or the nursing shortage according to CEOs and reported in the Wall Street Journal. They fear the huge health costs of caring for obese people.
These are not just the direct costs of healthcare, which in the US will almost directly impact insurance costs for employers, but an increased number of sickness days. Added into that, if one of your brightest performers is sick due to an obesity caused disease, you've an opportunity cost within the business.
What can CEOs do about this? One solution I like is the approach taken by Sprint in the US. Create a work environment that is conducive to good health. There are other initiatives that can be taken: for example, make sure that the cafeteria offers a good balance of healthy food or educate employees on the merits of a mainly raw fruit and vegetable diet.
