You've probably heard that the Obamas created an organic garden in the grounds of the White House? They're even going to promote organic food! Isn't that great? Just by doing this, they are lending credibility to the whole organic movement. There are still a lot of people who believe that organic products are nothing more than a cynical attempt to get people to part with their money. They are convinced that the only difference for man between conventional and organic products is in the pricing. And so it's not surprising that the Obamas have received letters from the Mid-America Crop Life Association (MACA) requesting them to give up on their project. The MACA has suggested that the Obamas' stance poses a serious threat to traditional agriculture. Well don't you know..... What is equally interesting, but less well known, is that Mrs Bush, the ex-First Lady, requested that all the dishes prepared at the White House were made from organic produce. You can imagine the fuss that would have been made in the US if that information had been made public a few years ago. By their acts, even if they are symbolic, the Obamas are helping everyone who wants to lead a more organic and Zen life. In a few years we may look back on this organic vegetable patch as a turning point in the history of organic agriculture. Image source: Flickr - jdickert/263469928 |
