The small town of Whistler, British Columbia, is home to the largest fleet of hydrogen-powered buses in the world. As part of the "Greenest Olympics ever", BC Transit has purchased 20 vehicles and installed the world's largest hydrogen refuelling station.
It's also a display of the green credentials of Canadian industry. The buses have been almost entirely made in Canada: the fuel cells in BC, the bus chassis are from Manitoba and the gas itself is brought in from Quebec. Although it may seem a long way to bring fuel, it's substantially fewer fuel miles than bringing oil from the Middle East.
The buses are particularly advantageous in Whistler which is prone to smog because of it's geographical location in a basin. Hydrogen buses produce no smog or greenhouse gases and use half as much fuel as conventionally powered vehicles.
From an environmental perspective, hydrogen use helps maintain Whistler as a rural, idylic country retreat that would be greatly damaged by pollution. Such a modern, clean mode of transport can help people leave their cars behind creating a better environment for everyone. How Zen is that?
Here is a video of the hydrogen buses in action:
