What's the best way to eat meat to be Zen? Is it Zen to eat meat at all?
Human beings have been eating meat for thousands of years and it has never been so popular. However, meat consumption has both an impact on your health and the environment in which you live.
Here are some simple rules to help you consume meat in a more Zen way.
How to eat meat in the least unhealthy way:
- Keep portion sizes small. Two thirds of your meal should be vegetables.
- Use meat to flavour meals rather than as the centre of the meal.
- Prefer white meat or fish over red meat.
- Avoid mass-produced meat.
- Only eat meat a few days a week as a "luxury" item.
How can you eat meat with the least environmental impact:
- Source your meat locally, preferably from an organic farm.
- Go to farmer's markets and ask about the food you're buying.
- If possible, ensure that your meat is pasture-fed.
- Avoid meat that has been through an industrial farm or CAFO.
Rather than spending a lot of money on cheap meat, spend more per pound, eat less and eat better quality. It'll taste much better, be better for you and better for the environment. On your meat free days, you'll be able to discover some of the wonderful vegetarian dishes available. It'll open up a new world for you.
Of course, the most Zen is to not eat meat at all - one day you may be ready for this next step!
