alt Yoga is a wonderful discipline that enables us to listen to ourselves, contemplate and bring the body and mind together.

I started Hatha Yoga a little by accident. I was looking for a physical activity that was gentle and would allow me to spend some time with myself.

The sessions that I joined were split into two parts. First of all, there was a moment plus centered on the body, where exercises were given to prepare the body for meditation. I was a little afraid because I've not been very physically flexible for a long time. To my surprise, the positions can be attempted by anyone, whatever their level of expertise and in their own time. This was a great relief to realise that the barriers to entry were really low and I could integrate easily into an experienced group.

Meditation is the key theme of the second part of the session. We lay down, like a corpse, close our eyes and don't move, just being guided by the wise words of the yogi. The idea is to make an empty space in your mind, remove negative thoughts, worries and re-occuring ideas. It's certainly not an easy thing to do to stop thinking about all of the things that make us uneasy in our daily lives.

In function of the aptitudes of each one of us, it can take a different number of sessions to become at ease with the different positions and the process of beginning meditation. Yet, from the first session, one can feel a certain well-being and incredible serenity. Yoga is really a discipline that everyone can benefit from, what ever their level of experience.

Here are two videos,  a beginner's course in yoga positions and a 1938 film of a grand Yogi.
