Bill Clinton shocked and astounded the world last week by admitting to Wolf Blitzer on CNN that he was following a near vegan diet. President Clinton claimed that he had decided to eat mainly fruit and vegetables in order to reduce cholesterol build-up in his veins and was delighted with the overall health benefits this diet brought, including a 24lbs weight loss.
This change of diet by President Clinton could go a long way to reducing America’s healthcare problem.
As America becomes ever more overweight and obese, the demands on the healthcare system will become ever greater. This will require more funds, making healthcare unaffordable for the country as a whole.
Weight gain and ill health is tightly linked to diet, so by making a big shift to fruit and vegetables as Bill Clinton has, the demands on the healthcare system can be reduced.
Bill and his wife Hilary tried to reform healthcare when he was president and failed, but now they have a real chance and opportunity to make a real change. Imagine, just imagine, if Bill spent 25% of his time talking about his new diet and its benefits. If he could get 15% of Americans to eat better 50% of the time, the impact would be enormous.
He also announced this on national television knowing full well that he would incur the wrath of the lobby groups for the dairy and meat processing industries. Frankly, for a man in his position, that takes guts and it suggests he truly believes that his new diet has made a real difference.
Of course, this could be a disadvantage for Republicans, if democrats are more likely to listen to Bill Clinton, they’re more likely to be healthy and to live longer, hence there will be more democratic voters in the future.
