Sir Ken Robinson, the noted education expert has been interviewed on CNN following his presentation at TED. He made a few really pertinent remarks about why our education systems are not serving the needs of society. He makes the point that today's education systems are designed for the needs of the age of mass production, an age that many of us have already left. Hence his remark that: "education is not like making motorcars, children actually care about how they're made." Another point that really connected with me was the concept of educating someone being like gardening. Sir Ken points out that all gardeners know that if you get the environmental factors right for a particular plant, the soil, sun and water, it will grow successfully. Create the right environment and a child will grow to be successful. I find that a really Zen viewpoint. Take the time to watch Sir Ken on CNN (3:34mins): Sir Ken believes that children need individualized education. Matt Hern has espoused similar ideas in his books, although Matt's viewpoint comes from a more community oriented concept.
