The population of animals in the arctic has been recorded over a 34 year period. Some have increased and some have diminished. While it’s not clear yet the impact of climate change, there are some indications that warming may be effecting arctic populations.
Commissioned by scientists from 8 arctic countries, the Arctic Species Trends Index (ASTI) has used data on arctic populations from 1970 to 2004 to see how they adapt over time. The key findings are:
Changes reported in the index clearly point to a movement in the balance of life in the arctic, a balance that is probably being effected by climate change. For more information, consult the key findings of the ASTI. There is also a video available with an overview of the ASTI project: Image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38485387@N02/3582475670 and http://www.flickr.com/photos/billyboysfotocolection/3993036636 |
