This week is World Breastfeeding Week, an event designed to increase awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding. It comes in the same week where Gisele Bundchen has suggested that mothers should be forced to breastfeed. The benefits of breastfeeding are no longer in doubt. It's now universally accepted that a child benefits from being breastfed both physically, through the nutrients in breastmilk and mentally through the increased closeness to the mother. Where breastfeeding is more controversial is on the impact on the parents life. Most advocates of breastfeeding believe that it makes feeding simpler as there is nothing to prepare and breast are almost always available. However, a large number of mothers still decide that they don't want to breastfeed, whether it's due to them wanting to keep their breasts for themselves, or they find that uncomfortable. There is also an argument that breastfeeding can exclude the father, yet this is not necessarily so. A father can contribute to feeding a child by waking up to give the baby to its mother and help it get back to sleep again. From ConnectionZen's point of view, given all the benefits of breastfeeding, it's clear that for the majority of mothers in the majority of cases, this is the best route to take. However, if a mother feels so against breastfeeding that they'll hate it, then passing those negative waves to the child would not be ideal either. To finish, here is the video produced for World Breastfeeding Week: Here's a delightful image of a mother breastfeeding her baby. ![]() Image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/benklocek/2784082287 |
