A delivery hurts! It's like a wave of pain, a big cramp, that comes and goes. The wave can last a minute or two before it goes away, leaving the expectant mother a few minutes of rest before the next one comes....
As the cervix increases in diameter, so does the intensity of the pain that comes with each wave. At a maximum dilation, the pain is intense and the contractions become closer. In the expulsion phase, the pain will be at its maximum.
The pain is caused principally by the dilation of the cervix, by the contraction of the womb and the pressure that the baby pits on the back and organs.
This video shows the progression of a baby during the dilation of the cervix and the expulsion from the womb.
Your Pain Will be Different From That of Another Mother
When faced with pain, the body excretes endorphins that help the expectant mother cope with the contractions. The pain can also be reduced if the mother feels confident and secure in her environment; that it is intimate, calm and gives warmth. Relaxation techniques, respiration, massages, baths, certain positions or even screaming can help reduce the pain of delivery.
The Choice of a Natural Birth
The pain of a natural birth is not like a pathological pain. It's the body that works to delivery a little baby. Above the risks that are inherent to an epidural, it's possible that there are other reasons that make a pregnant woman choose the pain of a natural delivery. It's during the contractions, at the moment that the mother feels the pain, that her baby progresses its fabulous journey towards birth.
For certain mothers, accepting pain is also to take the decision to accompany their baby in this journey to the exterior. It helps to put all of her body and mind to encourage her baby to leave her body. For other mothers, the pain that they feel is so intense, labour is so long or the mother is so worried about the contractions that an epidural is the best option.
Whatever choice is made, it's important that the people, both medical and other, who will accompany the mother during the delivery are able to listen to her needs and help and encourage her in her choices.
