![]() After nine months of warmth, contact and movement with their mother, a baby still needs to continue to feel these sensations in its new environment. Carrying your baby, against your tummy, on your back or on your hips allows your child to keep this feeling of comfort and security. Also, your baby is able to maintain the feeling of movement that they experienced as their pregnant mother moved around. Many cultures around the world still actively practice the carrying of babies, from Africa, South America and Asia. This practice is also becoming increasingly popular in Europe and North America. ![]() Carrying your child gives you the possibility of checking on them whilst carrying out other activities such as walking, shopping, cooking, writing etc.... It allows you to keep a contact with life without your child having to make do without warmth, comfort and their feelings of security. In using a specially designed scarf, parents can have a social life whilst at the same time taking care of their baby. Your child can choose to look at the outside world or snuggle up to you and rest, as shown in this video (in French, but visually engaging): There are several different systems available for carrying babies. One is the scarf, another the frontal sac. Their use allows carrier and baby to maintain ergonomically correct and comfortable positions. Children can be carried with such a system up until their 3rd birthday! Please note that often in the media, babies are shown being carried in a sac with their face out to the world. This is not a recommended position as it forces the baby to curve its back. A baby should always be carried with its back to the world and face to the carrier. |
